A periodontist is a healthcare professional specializing in the field of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of periodontal diseases or gum diseases. They are experts in the treatment of gum problems and also help in dental implants placements. They perform various kinds of treatments ranging from scaling to root planing. If needed, they also perform surgical procedures for patients with gum problems. These dentists are trained in dental implant placement, repair, and maintenance.

For becoming a periodontist, the candidate needs a bachelor’s degree from an accredited dental school, followed by extended three years of residency training in periodontics and doctoral degree in dental surgery or dentistry for advanced practice. And further, they would require passing the certification examination administered by the American Board of Periodontology.
