Xerophthalmia is a type of medical condition whose symptom includes the inability of the eye to create tears, and as a result, the eye becomes dry. This dryness is said to be because of the absence of a sufficient amount of Vitamin A. If the condition remains untreated for long, it can cause corneal ulceration, eventually leading to corneal damage and permanent blindness. In this condition, the conjunctiva becomes thick, dry, and wrinkled.

Xerophthalmia symptoms can be treated in many ways, such as using eye drops to reduce dryness, wearing wraparound glasses while going out, eating food that contains an increased amount of Vitamin A and other necessary nutrients, and using humidifiers to increase the humidity of the surrounding.
