Pulmonology is a specialized medical branch that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to the respiratory system. In some countries, pulmonology is also known as respiratory medicine and chest medicine. A physician trained and specialized in the treatment of respiratory and chest disease is known as a pulmonologist. From pneumonia, tuberculosis to emphysema and asthma, pulmonologists treat all the problems pertaining to the respiratory tract and the chest.

Pulmonologists perform various kinds of tests to diagnose the problem in the patient. It may include chest fluoroscopy, bronchoscopy, CT scan, pulmonary function test, thoracentesis, etc. Pulmonologists may practice in intensive care units of hospitals or may be a part of multidisciplinary practice and can even have their office.
