Periodontal disease is a dental problem in which infection of the gum surrounding the teeth takes place. It is also known as gum disease. This oral inflammation causes bleeding, swollen gums, and may lead to teeth fall out if not treated on time. The disease is caused by a bacteria formed on the teeth hours after brushing. Body’s reaction in response to this bacteria results in the creation of the infection and other related problems.

Gingivitis refers to the initial stage of periodontal disease in which the infected gum becomes red, swollen, and bleeds. When the inflammation of the gum becomes worse, leading to the second stage called periodontitis, the patient may lose his/her teeth.
