An optician is a technical medical practitioner who designs, dispenses and fits corrective lenses to correct a person’s vision. They make use of devices known as artificial eyes or shells to make cosmetic corrections of traumatic or anatomical vision defects. Opticians make use of corrective ophthalmic appliances such as spectacle lenses, ophthalmic prosthetics, contact lenses, and low vision aids. They work in various setting including hospitals, eye care centers, laboratories, retail stores, etc. To work as an optician, the professional needs to attain proper training and education, hold professional liability insurance, and meet standards of practice set by governing bodies in their domain.
